Connecting people

Global montage
Our Newcastle – Our World, our evolving international city plan and partnership is all about people and the difference they can make by working together locally and globally.

We are developing this from summer 2019 onwards and are involving people from across the city in discussions and exploring how we can join up and add value to internationalism and international activities.

We are testing our approach with an initial theme of Newcastle as An international city for our children and young people as confident, global citizens.

Our evolving partnership will support communities, groups and organisations to engage and connect to each other and to relevant international partners and activities.

We will support the sharing of knowledge, experience and ideas on issues which matter to people locally and globally, as well as helping to identify and activate opportunities and resources, to support international activities.

We will help make the most of existing connections to people, cities and regions across the world and explore new links and activities, where appropriate.

We will work with city, regional, UK and relevant international organisations to support our ambitions.

We are at the start of a new journey and approach to internationalism in Newcastle and are keen to engage with people who have expertise, ideas and resources which could support this.

We will share examples of activiites and collaboration as we proceed.

Connecting places

global links
Newcastle has strong global connections. We want to build on these and enhance them, to bring benefits to our city and the places we connect with.

The City has official civic connections across the world, where the City Council has twinning arrangements or other partnership arrangements in place. These are developing all the time and increasingly partners seek to enhance civic links with other types of economic, social and cultural connections.

We also have consuls links based in and around the city, supporting international residents and links with their countries.

Schools, colleges and especially our two universities, have extensive links with counterparts across the world, as well as students studying and professionals working here and abroad. Businesses based in the city have global trading links and our enterprise networks support and promote international trade.

Our arts, culture, heritage and sports sector deliver across the world, are active in international networks and welcome international practitioners to the city. Many civil society organisations, charities and social enterprises based in the city are working with international communities here and abroad and lobbying on issues.

The city is also home to a wide range of international communities and individuals, including: those who have settled here historically or more recently; people seeking asylum or refuge; international students; and professionals across public, private and voluntary sectors.
