Parading through the city with thousands of people, we joined in the Freedom on the Tyne event in December. It marked the culmination of the year of Freedom City 2017, honouring the memory of Martin Luther King in the struggle for racial justice, against poverty and war. Fifty years ago Martin Luther King was awarded an honorary doctorate at Newcastle University.
The closing event included street performers, narration of King’s words, beautiful imagery and song, recreating five great moments of the struggle for social justice from around the world. Processing to the Tyne Bridge, we remembered the turning at the bridge of Selma, and experienced stories of epic civil rights, as the Freedom City year progressed to its moving finale.
