A big Geordie welcome was extended at a special event to welcome new students from around the world to Newcastle.
We held an outdoor lesson in how to “Speak Geordie like a local” so our new international students can better understand our dialect as well as receive a wonderful welcome from locals! Students were invited to practice phrases, so they knew their “Why aye man!” from their “Canny”.
This event was part of the ‘Welcome Students of the World’ initiative organised by NE1, to celebrate the arrival of 80,000 students to the region from 152 countries across the world.
Students and locals joined us for a sing-along to famous local ditty the Blaydon Races – and for those who didn’t know the words they were displayed on a big screen at the Monument.
Newcastle remains the only city to welcome students from all institutions as one and we are proud to support NE1 offering this celebration in conjunction with Newcastle University, Northumbria University and Newcastle College.
